What
began as as an ambitious campaign to attract more women to NCNW
under its Recruit, Retain, Reclaim motto, grew into
an appeal to attract younger women to the organization. Recognizing
the need to harness the power, energy, and creativity of younger
women, a membership reception was planned. At
the reception, the Millennium Concept and the NCNW Young Womens
Issue forum was introduced to 40 young women eager to become a part
of the rich NCNW tradition. These initiatives involved energizing
young women to establish Millennium Sections and new NCNW programs
around the country. The message of collective power and leadership
that was initiated by Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of NCNW, needed
to be extended to younger women as well. As inheritors of the Bethune
Legacy, the Millennium Sections would be vital in strengthening
NCNW for the 21st Century.
The
Greater Atlanta Millennium Section (GAMS) of the NCNW was
chartered on March 24, 2000. On the 88th birthday of Dr. Dorothy
I. Height,
Chair and President Emerita of NCNW. GAMS was recognized as the
first Millennium Section in the country to receive her charter with
51 members.
Consistent
with the national organizations mission, GAMS is committed
to improving the quality of life for African American women and
their families in the metropolitan Atlanta area by serving as a
vehicle for self-enhancement, community outreach, social action
and economic development.
